Spiritual Entropy?

Scripture: For we are conscious that all living things are weeping and sorrowing in pain together till now. Romans 8:22

Scientists use the mysterious word “entropy” to describe one of the basic realities of life in the material world. Entropy is a quantity specifying the amount of disorder or randomness in a system bearing energy or information. What scientists tell us about entropy is that it always increases. That is their backhanded way of saying that, in the real world, things become more disorderly and chaotic over time. Most people know this as a matter of common sense. Things just naturally wear out and fall apart. It never works the other way. The only way we can prevent things from falling apart is to actively work at maintaining them. In other words, we have to put order back into things if we want to preserve them. If we just let things run their natural course, things fall apart.

The idea of entropy is also applicable in spiritual warfare. Satan is the author of chaos. He works at destroying the harmony and goodness that God wants us to enjoy. Every time we sin we assist Satan in achieving his goal. Because of our sinful nature, if we just let things run their natural course, we will be increasing the spiritual entropy in the world. It takes our active cooperation with the Holy Spirit to become proactive, turn our lives around, and do God’s will. Doing what comes naturally just won’t cut it. We have to work proactively to serve God. The default condition is always to serve Satan.

My prayer is that we will not be passive Christians. May we recognize that we have to make deliberate decisions each day to serve God. Otherwise, we are serving Satan. Let us pray for the energy and courage that we need to restore order in this fallen world. Someday, we will be with God in a place where entropy does not increase. For now, we have to work at maintaining order in accordance with God’s will.

Prayer: Lord, reset our hearts, so that we can choose good instead of evil. We confess our sinful nature and recognize that Jesus is our righteousness. Thank you for making a way for us to be reconciled. AMEN!

Prayer Tip: Recognizing sin is a very important piece to the puzzle of sanctification. We must recognize it to confess and turn from it. Ask God to give you keen eyes to recognize your sin.
