A Dose of Jesus

Scripture: God, who has called you into fellowship with his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, is faithful. 1Corinthians 1:9

I am not sure if you have ever had a teenager in your house. I haven’t gotten there yet, but I know that it is a trying time for moms, dads, kids, and beasts alike. Hormones, attitudes, boyfriends, girlfriends, freedoms, trust, responsibility, and the list goes on… I do think however, I can place my finger on the thing that most parents do want from their kids, relationship. We need a clear channel of communication, and we need to know that when all this is over that we still have a relationship with our children.

We are God’s children and that is exactly the way He feels about us. He wants us to be in relationship with Him. He doesn’t care how hard you are to get along with. He doesn’t care how bad you’ve been. In periods of rebellion and disobedience, in times of difficulty and change, all He wants is for us to remain in relationship with Him. Now don’t think I am saying that all these things are okay. What I am saying is more than perfect behavior, God wants a relationship with you.

I have had to repent so many times for allowing the good times in life to make me complacent in my fellowship with God. When things are going well I tend to wander off. I guess I need the heat turned up to turn me back to God. Are we the type that like to stop and have good long visits with God in fellowship or do we just drop in for a quick fix? Perhaps we just drive through only when we are in crisis. Yes, guilty. I have done that more times than I can count. Oh in my teenage years I can remember praying, God just get me out of this and I… Can you?

My sister wrote a poem about ten years ago and it makes me think of this concept. We are scared of what true commitment to God might bring us, so instead we just want enough to “fix” things. Are you a rebellious teenager looking to get your way and stomp off? Are you doing most of the talking and none of the listening? I hope that you will examine your relationship with God and make sure that you actually have a relationship with Him, one like the one you wish you could have with your very own children.

Give ME A Dose Of Jesus
By Dian Burch
June 1995

You’ve heard it said from every crest,
“Money can’t buy you happiness.”
But you can’t understand from another’s lips
A truth of God learned from fallen chips.

I’ve got everything a man calls dear
A family, a home, possessions, it’s clear
Then there are those who say, Jesus is what you need.”
So I listened to them, their voice I did head.

They’re right you know, God is the cure
But not like you’re thinking, that is for sure
“Give me a dose of Jesus,” you say,
“For I’m not feeling up to par today.”
“Don’t give me more than a mouthful, please.”
“Just give me enough to cure my disease.”

God has said His Spirit He’ll pour out
But not so you can control the spout
It’s for His plan that His Spirit is given
Not just so you can keep on living.

You say, “Well, I want some of God and I’m trying.”
But have you ever thought about dying
To all that you are and thought you might do
So others can see Christ in you?

Prayer: Faithful Father, Thank you for loving us like a good dad. Help us not to go our own way and deny ourselves of a meaningful relationship with you. Help us to understand that you always have our best interest in mind. AMEN!

Prayer Tip: In order to pray without ceasing we do have to have quick prayers all day long. But you should also set apart a quiet time alone with God, so you can do less talking and more listening.
